How much does a website cost in Australia?
Prices checked October 2026
Most small business websites cost between $3,000 and $10,000 in Australia, depending on how many pages, how much custom work and who writes the words. Larger custom business sites are published at about $5,000–$25,000, and custom web applications start around $25,000.
My own prices: small business sites $4,000–$9,000 + GST, and larger sites with integrations $10,000–$18,000 + GST. Every job gets a fixed quote after a short call, so the number doesn’t move halfway through.

G-05Drivers
What changes the price
Number of unique page designs. Fifty pages that share three templates cost less than fifteen pages that each need their own layout.
Who writes the words. Writing the copy is a real part of the job. Supplying your own brings the price down; good copy brings more enquiries.
Connections. A form that emails you is simple. A form that creates a job in your booking software, checks availability or takes a deposit takes more building and testing.
Custom features. Calculators, customer logins, product configurators and anything that needs a database.
Moving from an old site. Every old URL that ranks needs mapping to the new one, so you keep your Google history.
Design ambition. A clean template-based layout or a custom-built design with motion. Both can work. The second takes longer.

What a website costs to run each year
The build is a one-off. These are the ongoing costs, which you usually pay directly:
| Cost | Typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | A small yearly fee | .com.au domains renew every one to several years, depending on the registrar |
| Hosting | US$0–$45 a month for most of my builds | Netlify, plus Supabase where the site has a database (from my own proposals) |
| Often already covered | Google Workspace or iCloud+ if you need new mailboxes | |
| Care and updates | $150–$600 a month, if you want it | Published care plans in Australia run about $100–$500 a month for small business sites (WP Creative; Grove Foundry; ExIQ A$99–A$549 ex GST) |
| Shopify (stores) | From about $42 a month | Shopify’s starting price on annual billing (Grove Foundry); apps cost extra |
A common rule of thumb in published guides is to budget 10–15% of the build cost each year for upkeep (Grove Foundry). Some say up to 25% (whatsthedamage).
Freelancer, agency or DIY?
- DIY builders (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify themes) are the cheapest way to get online. You’re paying in time: the design, the words, the SEO and the fixes are yours.
- Freelancers generally cost less than agencies for the same scope, and you deal with the person doing the work. The risk is a freelancer who only does part of the job, such as design without SEO or the build without the connections.
- Agencies bring a team and charge for it. Larger agencies start around $8,000–$25,000+ for a business site (CREADIV).
I’m a freelancer who does the whole job: design, copy, build, connections, SEO and the care afterwards. You deal with me from the first call to launch.
Is a cheap website worth it?
A $1,500 website can be fine for a business that mostly gets work by word of mouth. It costs more than it saves when it doesn’t show up on Google, can’t take a quote request properly, or has to be rebuilt within two years. The question to ask isn’t “what’s the cheapest?” but “what will this site need to do in its first year, and what’s that worth?”
Can I claim my website on tax?
Usually, in part. The ATO treats building a website as a capital expense and ongoing running costs (such as hosting) as operating expenses. See the ATO’s guidance on website expenses and talk to your accountant. This isn’t tax advice.

Case study
How much does a website cost for a small business in Australia?
Most Australian providers publish $3,000–$10,000 for a 5–10 page small business site. Mine are $4,000–$9,000 + GST, fixed-quoted per job.
How much does a website cost in Sydney?
Sydney prices are in the same range as the rest of Australia. Sydney studios and agencies publish small business sites at about $2,000–$10,000 (CREADIV, Horn Tech, Spark Interact). Larger agencies start higher.
How much does a website cost per month?
Running costs are usually modest: a domain, hosting (often US$0–$45 a month for the sites I build) and email. Care plans, if you want someone looking after it, commonly run $100–$500 a month in Australia.
Why do website quotes vary so much?
They’re quoting different things. One price covers a template and your own words; another covers custom design, copywriting, booking-system connections and SEO. Ask each quote what’s included, who owns the site, and what it costs to run.
Do I own the website?
With me, yes. The code, content, domain and accounts are in your name from day one. Always ask this before you sign with anyone.
